Greenwich Country Club Hits a "Hole in One" with Renovations

As originally reported by David Fierro in Greenwich Time, August 2020

The course enhancements at Greenwich Country Club, founded in 1892, which has 650 members, included rebuilding and adjusting all the greens, extensive bunker work and new drainage and irrigation systems, as well as new tees. The goal was to enhance the playability and strategy of the course at the storied club.

“One of the most impressive aspects of Greenwich Country Club is the amount of member play across all different demographics,” GCC General Manager Keith Armstrong said. “The changes made promote a high level of play for all handicaps, and the feedback we have received has been extremely positive. The preplanning phase of the project included infrastructure and combining all the pieces.”

Added Armstrong: “Our architect Beau Welling came in, listened to the membership and took what he thought was great about Greenwich Country Club and evolved it with new ideas. He assessed the golfing goals of the membership, the layout of the course and produced an amazing finished project.”

The renovation, which began in July 2018 and was completed by Memorial Day of 2019. Golf course builder McDonald & Sons of Jessup, Md., did the construction work. “We felt we had a really great opportunity to create a solid golf course,” Welling said. “We created new greens, new bunkers and we moved forward some tees. It ended up being a significant renovation.”
